Um, he's a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins and he lives in the Shire in Middle-Earth to accompany Thorin Oakenshield's company of Dwarves part of the Line of Durin to reclaim their homeland of Erebor/ the Lonely Mountain. They're not really "friends" until later.

This movie is brilliant! With all of the adventures, and on-the-edge-of-your-seat-moments, this movie is a must see! Even though there are three different "The Hobbit" movies, it's worth it to enjoy the adventure. :)
